William T. Hornaday Silver Medal Scouting’s Rarest Award (2018)

The William T. Hornaday Silver medal is scouting’s highest honor in conservation, and the rarest award in scouting, Less than 160 have be awarded in the past 100 years. It is awarded by the Boys Scouts of America (now Scouts BSA), but judged by a National panel of conservation experts that convenes each year. While Eagle projects are judged locally and have objective criteria, Hornaday medal level projects are judged selectively on their environmental impact and significance. Only 25% of Hornaday applications are approved. While over 50,000 Eagle Scout awards are earned each year, last year only 3 Silver Medal were awarded. To be considered for the Silver Medal a minimum of four conservation projects much be submitted. Each project includes an “action” component, often seen with an Eagle project. Hornaday projects differ in that they tend to be larger in scale and longer term. In addition to the service project , each initiative must also include scientific research, education, and promotion to the community. My projects included the participation of over 1000 student volunteers, contributing over 3000 hours. I have partnered with 10 different conservation organizations. This is my fourth year working on these intiatives.

Congressional Award Gold Medal (2019)

The Congressional Award, the highest Congressional award for youth, is open to all Americans from ages 14 to 23. For this award, I completed over 400 hours of voluntary service, over 200 hours of personal development, and over 200 hours working on a physical fitness goal, and planned a required expedition trip.

I was also honored to attend the “STEM Stars Award” reception with members of Congress in the Kennedy Caucus Room. I received the STEM Stars Award due to my work on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) providing education opportunities for disadvantaged students
